Persistent pollutants exceed toxic thresholds in a freshwater top predator decades after legislative control

چکیده

Declining emissions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), subject to international control under the Stockholm convention, are not consistently reflected in biotic samples. To assess spatial and temporal variation organochlorine pesticides PCBs UK freshwaters, we analysed tissues a sentinel predator, Eurasian otter, Lutra lutra between 1992 2009. Past declines otter populations have been linked POPs it is unclear whether recovery hampered any areas by their persistence. PCBs, DDT (and derivatives), dieldrin HCB were detected over 80% 755 livers sampled. Concentrations ?PCB, ?DDT declined across UK, but there was no significant time trend for ?PCB-TEQ (WHO toxic equivalency, Van den Berg et al., 2006) or HCB. In general, higher concentrations found midlands eastern regions, lowest western regions. otters increased near coast, potentially reflecting pollutant levels estuarine systems. Decades after legislative controls, these legacy still pose risk other freshwater predators, with spatially widespread exceedance thresholds above which reproduction survival has reduced related species.

Persistent organic pollution in a high-Arctic top predator: sex-dependent thresholds in adult survival.

In long-lived species, any negative effect of pollution on adult survival may pose serious hazards to breeding populations. In this study, we measured concentrations of various organochlorines (OCs) (polychlorinated biphenyl and OC pesticides) in the blood of a large number of adult glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) breeding on Bjørnøya (Bear Island) in the Norwegian Arctic, and modelled their...

Persistent toxic chemicals: more than Stockholm persistent organic pollutants.

Schafer and Kegley bring up the important issue of excessive chemicals exposure of children. Existing evi...

Effects of climate change on trait-based dynamics of a top predator in freshwater ecosystems.

Predicted universal responses of ectotherms to climate warming include increased maximum population growth rate and changes in body size through the temperature-size rule. However, the mechanisms that would underlie these predicted responses are not clear. Many studies have focused on proximate mechanisms of physiological processes affecting individual growth. One can also consider ultimate mec...

Criteria air pollutants and toxic air pollutants.

This review presents a brief overview of the health effects and exposures of two criteria pollutants--ozone and particulate matter--and two toxic air pollutants--benzene and formaldehyde. These pollutants were selected from the six criteria pollutants and from the 189 toxic air pollutants on the basis of their prevalence in the United States, their physicochemical behavior, and the magnitude of...
